Ford,

In coaching and training future Rainmakers I continually come across introverts and those who are intimidated by the situation.

These situations include:
1. I am 30 years old and now have to talk to a 50 year old high level person.
2. At a client site I casually meet the CEO, CFO, etc.
3. I meet two new people at a client meeting.
4. I sit next to a business looking person on an airplane.

Of course, the question is always what do I do?

The answer: Do not try to share experiences or show them how smart you are. Instead ... ask questions, listen, do not interrupt ... learn about them.

I have written about netoworking for introverts for years and one of the things that work is for people to capilatlize on who they are by volunteering in organizations. So for example, volunteer to be the group's treasurer, if you have financial expertise. That way you are immediately seen as valuable, it's something that you like to do and it's a place from which to begin many conversations.

Also, introverts are fantastic listeners! Don't ever forget that because someone else's small talk you will probably remember.

Finally, networking is very simple, frankly. You see, you as a walking breathing living solution to someone else's problem. Someone out there is having nightmares. Get curious as to who is in pain and then, offer your healing!

Christopher:

I am not qualified to answer this one. It's one for a psychologist.

Introverts can be extremely effective at developing business. We have many examples in our data base of rainmakers. So, those who want to become extroverts should do it for other reasons (if they can). Like most introverts, I am quite happy to be one, and more so as the years pass. There may be some uncomfortable moments, but also sublime ones.

A somewhat different issue is whether an introvert can learn to behave like an extrovert when needed or desired. This is a matter of flexibility and most introverts can learn to be increasingly flexible. But they have to want to.

I hope this helps.

Ford,

Is there any way to fully break the habits of being an introvert? There must be folks who are somewhat introverted who want to become fully extrovert.
