Ford,

There's literature stating that "weak ties" (i.e., people you don't know so well) can be more valuable in a network than strong ties. The original paper is called "The Strength of Weak Ties" by Mark Granovetter, and I read that it's one of the most cited papers in the world. There's a link to the paper at http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=2&url=http%3A%2F%2Fnetmap.files.wordpress.com%2F2008%2F05%2Fgranovetter_1983_weak_ties_revisited1.pdf&ei=a34sSO-GEJCg8gSYp6mMBg&usg=AFQjCNEhgJRR7iEEBXOfuHhC5QP488oWew&sig2=ci5_bi2CUYm2L2t72FBXcg
